AN OPEN MINDThe following letter to the editor, from Assembly member
Linda Dorey, appeared in The Vancouver Sun
on Saturday August 12, 2004:
Electoral assembly member has an open mind
Re: Lineup of assembly speakers favours change 8-1, Vaughn
Palmer, Aug. 12:
As a member of the Citizens' Assembly on Electoral Reform I take
issue with Vaughn Palmer's contention that members would not
dedicate themselves to the work of the assembly if they did not
think the system needed fixing.
I had no particular dissatisfaction with the current system, but I became involved because I believe strongly in my responsibility to vote and to be informed about politics in British Columbia. I thought the Assembly would be a unique and interesting experience and that I might be able to make a modest contribution to my province. In the decision-making process, I will be guided by the opinions expressed by many British Columbians and my new-found knowledge of electoral systems -- not by personal preconceived notions.
