Vancouver (Internal)
Citizens' Assembly begins
meetings
The Citizens' Assembly on Electoral Reform begins its meetings
in Vancouver this coming weekend, January 10-11.
The sessions will be at the Morris J. Wosk Centre for Dialogue
at 580 West Hastings Street in downtown Vancouver. The agenda on
Saturday runs from 9 a.m. through 4:30 p.m., and on Sunday from 9
a.m. to 12:45 p.m.
Sessions are open to the public, but space at the Wosk Centre is
extremely limited. If you would like to attend, please register in
advance by phoning the Assembly office at 604-660-1232 or by e-mail
to The members will start by developing a set of
criteria that reflect what people expect and need from an electoral
system. They will also begin to explore the impact of electoral
systems on the structure and practice of democratic politics and
government.
The Assembly has 160 members from all over B.C. –
one man and one woman from each of the 79 provincial electoral
districts, plus two Aboriginal members.
The Assembly members will spend much of 2004 examining electoral
systems in use around the world, and will decide if they should
propose a change to B.C.’s current system of
translating votes into seats in the Legislature.
If the Assembly members recommend a change, it will be the
subject of a referendum for all voters in the 2005 provincial
election. Any change approved by the voters would take effect with
the 2009 B.C. election.
