independent

An independent candidate or member of parliament is one who is not a member of a political party .  Independents have been elected to the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia, the last being in 1949.  A member elected to the legislative assembly as a member of a party may subsequently decide to leave the party and sit as an independent.
