Abstract
I would prefer a preferential electoral system [the alternative vote, AV] to a proportional one as it would still produce effective government rather than giving a disproportionate amount of control to minority parties. [1 page]

My largest concern with our current election process is the fact that candidates can "run up the middle" and be elected when they have only received a small portion of the ballots but have received more than others due to vote splitting. I would much prefer a system of preferential balloting where a candidate must receive 50%+1 of the votes in order to be elected [the alternative vote, AV]. This would ensure that the candidate elected truly represents the wishes of the electorate and not the one who hardly anyone wants as votes were split between two other parties. I would prefer this to a proportional representation system as it would still produce effective government rather than a proportional representation system where a disproportionate amount of control can often be weilded by a minority party who can always threaten to leave the governing coalition if they do not get their way.
