Abstract
|
I would prefer a preferential electoral system [the
alternative vote, AV] to a proportional one
as it would still produce effective government rather than giving a
disproportionate amount of control to minority parties.

My largest concern with our current election process is the fact
that candidates can "run up the middle" and be elected when they
have only received a small portion of the ballots but have received
more than others due to vote splitting. I would much prefer a
system of preferential balloting where a candidate must receive
50%+1 of the votes in order to be elected [the alternative vote,
AV]. This would ensure that the candidate elected truly represents
the wishes of the electorate and not the one who hardly anyone
wants as votes were split between two other parties. I would prefer
this to a proportional representation system as it would still
produce effective government rather than a proportional
representation system where a disproportionate amount of control
can often be weilded by a minority party who can always threaten to
leave the governing coalition if they do not get their way.
