There’s something seriously askew with an electoral
system in which one party holds 97% of the seats with only
50-something % of the vote.
It means that large numbers of the voters are not being
represented by the party of their choice. It means that voters of
different parties are not being fairly represented in the
legislature. It means that too much power has been given to one
party and has given them false ideas as to the scope of their
mandate on the issues that matter to British Columbians. It means
that parties with significant support in terms of votes do not get
the chance to speak on behalf of those supporters in the halls of
government
We believe that British Columbia needs changes to its electoral
system. Some sort of proportional representation [PR] is
desperately needed here. We strongly urge the Citizens’
Assembly to recommend changes to the provincial government. We
would welcome the opportunity to vote for proportional
representation in a referendum next May.
