I support the introduction of an electoral system based on some
form of mixed proportional representation [MMP].
My reasons for supporting proportional representation are as
follows:
-
The present system is clearly undemocratic, having produced
unrepresentative legislatures in the last two elections;
-
A system of proportional representation would prevent a party
winning a majority of seats with a minority of votes;
-
A system of proportional representation would allow minority
viewpoints to be represented;
-
A system of proportional representation would ensure that the
proportion of seats held by a party in the legislature more closely
represented their share of the vote; and
-
A system of proportional representation would ensure that fewer
votes would be wasted (i.e. that a larger percentage of votes cast
would be represented in the legislature).
I support a mixed system of proportional representation (where
voters cast two votes, one for a party and one for a candidate and
some of the seats are elected from geographically based
constituencies while the rest of the seats are distributed in a
manner that ensures that parties are represented in proportion to
their votes. My reason for supporting a mixed proportional
representation system is that Canada has a tradition of
geographically-based elected representatives and I believe that a
mixed system would provide the benefits of both systems: the
increased democracy of a proportional system and the accountability
to a specific community of a geographically-based electoral
system.
