I have a problem with proportional representation [PR], at least
as I understand it. My concern is that it will become more
important to be a prominent party member, than it will be to run in
an election. This is assuming that a party that gets sufficient
votes gets to appoint one or more of our MLAs. My preference would
be the first past the post concept modified to include 2nd choice
selections. The candidate with the highest total of 1st and 2nd
votes totalling 50% of the voter turnout in the riding would be
elected. This or some similar process, although cumbersome, would
seem to me to retain the present system's credibility. It should
enable us to retain the advantages of our present system without
compromising the electoral process.
