Hello. I am a thirty year resident of British Columbia and would
like to give you my input so it can be taken into account in your
deliberations.
I have taken part in all federal, provincial and regional
district elections since I was first eligible to vote. In that time
I have never voted for a winning candidate provincially or
federally. Many of my friends have accused me of wasting my vote,
but I vote for the party/people who I feel best
represent my views on what the important issues of the day are and
how they should be dealt with. I make no apologies for that.
Obviously the majority of the electorate don’t share my
opinions. That is fine and I obviously don’t expect
that the party I vote for should form the government. But that
party, if supported by a significant percentage of the population
(five percent or more), should be represented in Victoria. Right
now this doesn’t happen. I am effectively
disenfranchised by the first-past-the-post-system.
I would like my vote to count for something.
I support a mixed member proportional system [MMP]. This will
allow representation in the legislature that more accurately
reflects the sentiments of the electorate.
I won’t go into the details of this system as
I’m sure you get lots of technical submissions but I
will say that I like the recommendations of the system as proposed
by the Free Your Vote, Pro-Rep Society.
I appreciate the time and effort you folks are putting in and
hope that all your work results in a fairer and more effective
system of electoral representation. Good luck.
