Proposal for a No Party System
The party system is a contentious system. It doesn't matter if
proposed legislation is beneficial or not -- the opposition will do
just that: oppose. Even if it is something they previously proposed
themselves or will propose once they are in power.
Instead we should have a no-party parliamentary system, as they do
in Nunavut, and as the first President of the US, George
Washington, originally wanted for his country. If all candidates
have to run as independents, then electing someone you thought
lesser to parliament because you wanted that party to win would be
a thing of the past. You could vote for who you wanted to, who you
thought best represented your interests in your riding.
Your new independent MP would have as much voice as anyone. They
would not be relegated to the back bench as there would be no such
thing. Our independently chosen candidate would have a say.
Instead of parties thrusting leaders at us who are the most venal,
the position of premier would be a secondary run off
amongst the sitting independent members. The premier would be
chosen from the sitting members who stated in their campaigns what
their visions for the province would be if they were selected as
premier. And a simple vote by the sitting MPs could unseat and
replace the an unpopular premier without causing a non-confidence
vote in the government as a whole.
Please consider this as an option to end the gridlock of party
politics and predatory premierships.
