Thank you for this opportunity to express my views on this very
important subject.
There is clearly a democratic deficit not just in BC but in all
of Canada. One reason for this deficit is the fact that a political
party can actually hold a ‘majority’
government when in fact they receive far less than 50% of the vote.
This is not simply undemocratic, I believe it is the lie that has
created the cynicism and voter apathy that is rampant in BC and
Canada today.
Should we decide to join the majority of democracies in the
world today and change our first past the post electoral system to
some form of proportional representation [PR], then I can guarantee
that we would see a renewed enthusiasm in voters. This power of
each of our votes actually counting in a pro rep system, would
revitalize not just our electoral system, I believe that it would
create an optimism that would filter through all of our
society.
So please in the name of all that is good and just I ask that
you, the Citzens’ Assembly, do everything in your power
to make the change to an electoral system based on proportional
representation. This is a very valuable opportunity, and what is
also needed is to launch immediately an educational campaign to
inform the public of this issue and the benefits of pro rep.
