Electoral reform is long overdue in Canada. The first past the
post system was logical when it was a two party system. The
electorate has many viable choices now and the elected body should
reflect those choices.
Two fundamental things change with some system of proportional
representation [PR]. The situation where as little as 35% of the
votes cast can elect a government would no longer exist and the
fear and blackmail employed to get people to vote 'strategically'
would no longer work as well.
Voters would be able to cast their vote according to their
beliefs and conscience (which is what the act of voting should be)
and not on fear and loathing of what might be unless they abandon
their beliefs to vote for bad to avoid worse. A pro-rep
legislature would better refect the wishes of the entire electorate
and not that of a, sometimes, fictitious majority.
