Abstract
If one votes for a party, then why have local electoral districts and candidates. But, if one votes for a candidate, then why have parties? If candidates were independent, they would represent their riding. Isn't this preferable? [1 page]

Proportional representation, in whatever form, only complements the existing flaw in our system. It would be better to drastically change the system -- perhaps to a consensus systen as the NWT and Nunavut -- than to tinker. Others have argued that the party they voted for did not receive recognition proportionally. If one votes for a party, then why have local electoral districts and candidates, let the winning party decide. On the other hand, if one votes for a candidate, then why have the party, if candidates were independent, then they would represent their riding. I would argue that the latter is preferable.
