I do not support the STV formula for electing members as it has
been tried and tested and has not worked. Malta and Ireland are the
only 2 countries which has this system. Malta is a very small
country (British) and it's young population has emigrated to
western Europe and North America leaving a big void. It's senior
population is in majority and not very interested in the serious
matters affecting the entire population. Malta’s aging
population has been looked after by British government. As for
Ireland they are having problems too. The system is
complicated and the average joe doesn't see the necessity for
making this any more complicated. The bottom line is
first past the post (the British system) has not worked in Canada
and every effort must be made to improve this system.
We don't need the ideologues (lawyers etc.) to come up with another
system. This will be a leap in the dark. Let us work on
the proportional representation which is working effectively in New
Zealand and Western Europe and Eastern European. The Warsaw pact
countries have gone for it and is being implemented. There is no
point in inventing the wheel. Why replace a system if it has worked
well for countries who are using it effectively with no nightmares
and no exercise in mental gymnastics to bother about?
