Thank you for giving me the opportunity to share my view on
electoral reform. I truly believe it is time to
change how we elect our representatives in
government.
I feel I have a responsibility as a citizen of a democratic
country to vote at election time. Too many people have died so that
I have that right today. Even now, there are candidates being
murdered during election campaigns (Mexico), duly elected
representatives being held hostage in their countries (Myanmar) and
millions of people struggling for the opportunity to elect their
representatives fairly (Hong Kong). I am grateful that I can go to
a location, put an ‘X” by
someone’s name and leave the polling station without
worrying if I will be murdered on my way in or out. But that is not
enough.
During Federal elections, the only votes that count are from
Ontario and Quebec. The next government has been decided by the
time those votes have been counted. In Provincial elections, we had
two successive governments (NDP and Liberal) elected through the
First Past the Post method that do not truly represent government
that people cast votes for. “If my vote
doesn’t count, why should I bother to
vote?” is the way many people feel about elections now.
Why else would there be such a low turnout at election time.
I am asking for a change to a Mixed Member Proportional
Representation method so I know that my vote will count.
