I would like to add my support to the idea or a mixed
proportional [MMP] electoral system. The oft cited criticism of
this system is parlaimentary fragmentation and constant coalition
governments. Canadian history demonstrates that some of our most
enlightened legislation (pension and medicare) was crafted by
minority governments and some of the worst decisions (arrow
airplane, free trade) made by strong majority governments. The
reality in a multiparty democracy with first past the post format,
majority governments frequently result with far less than a 50%
mandate. Unfortunately they frequently govern along narrow
idealogical lines as if they did have that greater than 50%
mandate. It's my belief that a MPP format would reduce
the extreme political polarization that has characterized BC
politics during my adult life.
