Proportional Representation--Yes
I believe the Proportional
Representation [PR] system of voting is the
only hope for democracy in B.C. What we have now is not
democracy; it is what I would call ‘serial
dictatorship’. The whole range of views of
all of our citizens is not fairly represented in the
legislature. At the moment we do not even have an
official opposition. We have massive swings to the
right and to the left, each party that wins a majority then setting
about undoing the legislation brought in by its
predecessor. This is a waste of time, money, and
resources. With Proportional Representation there would
be more stability, a more balance government working together
cooperatively to achieve consensus. The values and
principles of all of our citizens would be taken into account in
decision-making.
There would be greater voter turnout in elections when voters
realize that their vote really counts.
Another thing I like about Proportional Representation is the
way the votes for the candidate and for the party are separated
out. With this system we would be able to vote for the
best candidate in our area regardless of their party
affiliation. Yet with our party vote we know that our
political ideologies would still be fairly represented in the
overall outcome in terms of the proportion of seats in the
legislature assigned to the party of our choice.
I think Proportional Representation is a great system and I want
to see it implemented here in B.C.
