I, a 25 year old University of Victoria graduate (single male in
Chilliwack), would very much like to see proportional
representation [PR] in BC and the rest of the
country.
The current system of representation dates back to a time when
distances between voting districts were significant and not easily
traveled (by person or mail). Today these boundaries are
meaningless. For example, in cities, the boundaries are arbitrary
lines drawn down random streets. There seems to be little
difference between the population on one side of the street
compared to the other side.
I believe in proportional representation because it is more
honest and more democratic than the current system.
I currently live in the very conservative town of Chilliwack. I
am not conservative but I feel my vote does not mean anything here
because I know a conservative candidate (ie. BC Liberals or the
federal Conservative Party) will win with well over 50% of the
popular vote.
I have read through much of the material provided on the
website. Personally, I like the Finnish system of selecting a
candidate and a party [PR with open list].
Variety is the spice of life. Giving us more choices would make
politics more interesting.
But remember, “A just policy is one to which we
would agree if we could not know whether it would benefit us
personally or not.” (Kant or Rawls)
