I am an inner city teacher who is concerned that our current
electoral process is outdated and does not properly represent the
people of British Columbia. A Mixed Member Proportional (MMP)
system like the one adopted in New Zealand would take us further
towards a common good of all our citizens. It gives more choice to
voters, (voting for a local representative and voting for a party),
ensures that almost all votes count towards electing a person's
first choice and gives proportional election results. It also leads
to more coalition governments, greater cooperation between parties
and more women being elected. Countries with proportional
representation have the highest number of women elected in the
world.
If we are to allow everyone in British Columbia a voice in the
future, then a Mixed Member Proportional system is currently our
best alternative.
