I have just heard a rumour that you haven't been getting much
public feedback. I'm sorry to hear this, if true, as I'm sure that
many people have good thinking and strong opinions on the topic of
electoral reform if they were made aware of the options and the
process you excellent folks are over-seeing.
I definitely have an opinion! (as do many of my family, friends
and colleagues).
As our system is currently set-up, I feel very, very helpless as
a voter. I have seen many different people represent me in both
provincial and federal government. Only once was my representative
someone I voted for. Usually the representative had been voted for
by LESS THAN HALF of those that voted. This is absolutely
unacceptable to me!
When we had a political system that was limited to two parties,
and two choices, this did not occur. I do not support reverting to
a two-party system.
What I would most like to see, is a system of proportional
representation that reflects the ACTUAL percentages of who people
voted for. (Not the "first past the post" system we have now.) Not
only is our current system frustrating to those of us whose
candidate of choice was not elected, it also leads to these drastic
pendulum swings of government policy and regime. The NDP are ousted
when they've upset enough people. Then the Liberals (or PC's or any
other party that gains supremacy) take over with very little
opposition, make sweeping changes until they've upset enough people
to swing the "majority" another way.
Proportional representation would allow more discourse in our
government, more accountability, more collaboration and more
OWNERSHIP by the voters themselves!
Please do not give up on this process. You are the hope of the
people. You have the slender chance to make a huge difference to
this Province, and to be visionaries helping create a truly
democratic government.
Make us proud!
