Like many other Canadians in the recent Federal election I was
at a loss as to why or where to cast my vote. As in every other
election, however, I did my civic duty but with each election I
find it harder to vote. I am an immigrant to Canada and my voting
record over the last 40 years is pathetic. I have only twice voted
for the winning candidate (both times at the provincial level).
I appreciate the work of the Citizens Assembly, and I do
hope that you are able to restore democracy. It certainly isn't
democracy when you have only 40% people voting (and as low as 20%
in some municipal elections). In my federal riding it translates
into someone being elected with only about 15% of the eligible
votes, or alternatively 85% not voting for the person elected.
I believe that proportional representation [PR] will
restore voter confidence. I know that I am tired of my vote not
counting.
