I strongly believe that a New-Zealand style MMP system would
address the major problems with our electoral system as it
currently exists.
I do not believe that our current system is serving us well, as we
swerve wildly from one party government to another with little
apparent accountability to the electorate between elections, and no
apparent requirement for a collaborative or consultative approach
to legislation.
I would like to see a mixed system in which parties would be
required to field candidates in at least half of the ridings in the
Province in order to qualify to the "list" process, and would also
be required to make public the democratic method whereby their
lists are formed, and the names on the list, before the
election.
I would also endorse the "flexible list" option in which a voter
may affect the ranking of the "listed" candidates. Voters should
get two ballots, one for the constituency and one for the party
lists.
Thank you for the opportunity to participate in the reform of BC's
electoral system.
