I think BC should adopt the Mixed Member Proportional system
like New Zealand adopted because it would make people feel that
their vote really counts. (But perhaps a mix of the MMP and the
current system would also work.) If you vote for anyone besides the
one or two major parties, it seems completely futile, and thus
discourages people from voting. Having a wider mix of parties in
parlement would lead to more perspectives on every issue and thus
hopefully more intelligent decisions. Ordinary citizens might then
feel they really had a voice in government, and young people might
become more interested in trying to change things through the
governmental system. That said, if the electoral process changes, I
think there needs to be a big public awareness campaign informing
all sectors of the public what has changed, how the new system can
benefit them, and how (exactly) they can use it to voice their
opinions and truly make a difference. Also, a new system should be
allowed to function for a few years to gauge its effectiveness -- a
one year trial will not be sufficient to determine how well it is
working. Thanks for trying to encourage discussion on this
topic.
