I would like to see a change in Canada’s electoral
system, (including provincial elections). However, not
being an expert in such matters I hesitate to give any personal
suggestions.
On listening to the program on the new V.I. TV the other
evening, re: electoral reform, mention was made of the systems used
in Australia and Germany. Perhaps something similar
would be the answer for us; however, I would leave the decision to
a panel of knowledgeable people.
On the above mentioned program the matter of political
accountability was talked about. Promises made during
an election campaign should offer definite benefits for the people
and be acted upon if the party making the promise is
elected. Should it be discovered that such action would
prove to be not beneficial then a prompt truthful explanation must
be made by the party leader and an appropriate cabinet minister to
the public. Perhaps a mini question period could follow
with the leader of the opposition and another member of his
choosing asking why.
Politicians have always established their platform.
What if public (reasonable wishes) were confirmed and the
politicians were given the opportunity to outline how they would
operate to fulfill those wishes.
Your work is much appreciated,
