I would like to express my support for a Mixed Member
Proportional [MMP] voting system, or Additional Member System as it
is known in Britain. Last year I returned from living for three
years in the UK, and during that time I observed first-hand the
workings of the mixed member electoral systems in use in Scotland
and Wales.
I found such systems to be fully compatible with a Westminster
parliamentary system of government and that they do indeed provide
the best of both worlds: a constituency or regional link for all
elected members of the parliament (or assembly in the case of
Wales) and fairer representation for voters of all political
parties with significant electoral support. Furthermore, I did not
come across any evidence that voters do not understand or support
the mixed systems--indeed, a great many I talked to quite
appreciated the mixed system and its benefits.
It was these observations and more that helped convince me that
some similar form of mixed member or additional member proportional
system would be best for British Columbia and I hope that the
Citizens' Assembly will recommend in favour of such.
