I would like to see an end to the first past the post system in
BC. A different system should help to get more people to vote since
they may feel that their vote makes a difference. In our riding the
most conservative candidate gets about 80%, so why vote if you
don't like him?
I suggest reducing the number of ridings by half, with those
members elected on a priority vote ie 1st, 2nd and 3rd choice until
50% plus is reached.
The other half of the seats would be allotted on a proportional
basis, to parties gaining more than 10% (+,?) of the popular vote.
For this section, the parties should have to declare their
potential candidates, prioritized, before the election so the
electorate could see what they may get. Ideally it would be a
fairly even geographical representation.
There are disadvantages in every system, the main one I see with my
suggestion would be no independent candidates. We rarely see
independents running though.
By the way, I had a tough time getting to this page. I could not
remember the full address and the web does not seem to recognize
"citizensassembly" without the bc.ca
Thank you for the oportunity to comment. I was out of town when the
road show came by.
