I am in favour of a province-wide proportional representation
[PR] system which would accurately reflect the number of
votes made for each political party in provincial elections. With
e-mail and web-sites I feel I could keep in touch with my
representative even if he/she lived at a distance. I am much more
concerned to have my political point of view reflected in the
provincial legislature than to have an MLA who supposedly
represents the community where I live.
At present we have a politically one-sided legislature, even
though many people in the province voted for other political
parties. This has been taken as a decisive 'mandate' by the
governing part when statistically it appears to be anything
but.
Perhaps the existence of proportional representation might
neccessitate more co-operation between political parties and even
coalition government. In my view this would be no bad thing. It
would be great to see all parties in the legislature problem
solving situations with the good of all BC citizens in mind, rather
than some party political agenda. Idealistic maybe, but these are
my views. An injection if idealism and vision into our provincial
electoral system may be just what is needed.
