Fairshare Voting Reform :Scotland's Campaign for Local Democracy

Our constitution prevents us from commenting on the situation in British Columbia or from making specific recommendations to you. However, it is apparent that you are facing many of the same issues as we have faced over the past few years as we have addressed reform of the voting system used to elect Local Authorities here in Scotland. Accordingly we would suggest that you visit our website www.fairsharevoting.org where you will find a great deal of information and links to many relevant documents.

Just for the record, on 23 June 2004, the Scottish Parliament voted overwhelmingly to pass the Local Governance (Scotland) Bill that will introduce the Single Transferable Vote system of Proportional Representation for the next set of Local Authority elections, due in May 2007. STV-PR with wards returning either three or four councillors will replace First-Past-The-Post with single-member wards.

For and on behalf of the Fairshare Campaign Committee
