Thank you for this opportunity to express my opinion.
Like many others, I am concerned about the dropping voter
turnouts, especially among our younger population. I am also keenly
aware that our present system continues to deepen the electorate's
disatisfaction with the current swing from one extreme to another.
A middle road is not possible with our "first-past-the-post"
system, one that was designed for a two-party system.
I would like to advocate a mixed system of proportional
representation [MMP] that would allow for the direct
election of a local candidate as well as a second vote for a
political party. This would give more representation to the
struggling smaller parties (who offer valid alternatives). The
result would more closely resemble the wishes of the
electorate.
It is time for British Columbia to become a modern democratic
"state", as is the case with virtually all other democracies.
I wish you well in your deliberations!
