This is a short submission to say that I am in favour of
proportional representation [PR]. However, it also requires a
minimum trial period of at least 15 years. PR is a great system for
the electorate and a pain in the neck for politicians. A minimum
trial period must be long enough to allow politicians to learn how
to operate effectively within that system. Politicians must have
time to learn how to present reasoned arguments on an issue, listen
to other reasoned arguments and reach compromises through a process
of principled negotiations. This approach is in stark contrast to
the present system which, more often than not, sees politicians
selling a platform and then bullying the electorate and other
political parties with a political agenda.
