I have read Nick Loenen's full proposal [
Loenen
0035], and find it far closer to my way of thinking, i.e. PR
with an open list to take away the party influence. I am very much
against the Party/Closed List , as it gives too much influence to
the party and therefore is not a great improvement over what we
have now. I made my own proposal for a Mixed PR, Open / STV system,
wherein the party puts up their list but the voter prioritizes that
list.
He has put a lot of work into his proposal and I like the majority
of his ideas. In fact I think that it is better than my own, and
therefore I will be endorsing his proposal, and don't know why the
majority of British Columbians would not support that proposal.
The Proportional Plus addresses most of my concerns, and the
obstacle of how complicated it is, does not bear on the voters,
only those that count, and I am sure that having a short course
before the election would clear up the problems. I understood it
with the first read through. I would prefer more proportional
representation, but the enhanced fairer representation, the
opportunity to prioritize a number of candidates while still having
an input into ones own constituency and, Particularly significantly
reducing Party Control over the MLA's make his the best system.
I am firmly onside with Mr. Loenen's proposal for Proportional
Plus.
