Abstract

By using regular referdums, Government will reflect what the
majority vote for and not just impose against the majority
will. It is, I believe, essential that we can avail
ourselves of this procedure easily. [2 pages]

Essentially, what I would like to see recommended with regard to
electoral reform is the simple introduction of referendums for any
issue that is of importance to the public.
For instance in Switzerland if a Canton can enlist x amount of
signatures a referendum is automatically held.
By allowing a referendum to take place if say 10 % of registered
voters require one then everyone will have the opportunity to voice
their opinion. This will prevent Government doing things we do not
like. For instance selling a highway or privatizing a service.
Government would then have to be accountable to peoples' wishes
which is not done through MLA representation as they follow party
lines.
Let people decide and make it easy to have a referendum.
Another example would be that the Government must reduce taxes each
year until they reach a certain level and that there will be no
more tax increases.
To make Government take notice of the electorate there must be
another method apart from MLA representation to allow civil
expression for or against policies.
Also Government in electoral reform should automatically be
required to have a referendum on any contentious issue regardless
of the amount of signatures collected.
By using regular referdums, Government will reflect what the
majority vote for and not just impose against the majority will.
It is, I believe, essential that we can avail ourselves of this
procedure easily.
Unlike signatures in favour could come from any area of BC.
Alternatively if 20 % of MLAs vote for a referendim then one shold
take place.
Having to wait 4/5 years to change anything is completely
unsatisfactory.
Referendum is the ultimate democratic decider.
