I would like to submit my support for a Mixed Member
Proportional, MMP system. I my view this system is both simple and
effective. I think it is important that a voting system be easy to
understand while achieving its goal of better representation that
our current first past the post system.
New Zealand has shown that this system can be easily understood by
the electorate and result in better government representation.
A MMP system also makes it more difficult for large corporate or
private donors to sway one party. It will be necessary for these
donors to spread their donations among more parties because the
outcome of any election will not be as easy to predict.
I often talk to people that say they are not going to vote, the
number one reason why they choose not to vote is that they feel
their vote will not benefit the party or person they support. If we
want to bring people back to the polls, especially young people, it
is necessary for every voter to feel that their vote counts.
When I explain the MMP system to friends, they quickly see how it
can result in a better, more representative government. The idea of
voting once for the local representative and once for the party is
very appealing and easy to understand. When faced with the
proposition of rating candidates under a STV system it is not as
clear how this will result in better representation of their
vote.
I believe that the decision to go to a MMP system will have a
greater benefit to British Columbia's future that any other option
currently being considered by the Citizens Assembly.
