I am writing since I cannot attend your session in Victoria. I
strongly urge you to find another, better system of electing our
government for B.C. I have rarely felt that anyone in the
legislature represented my wishes and opinions. I believe it is bad
government to have in sole command a party that has not gained 50%
of the votes cast, a situation which is often the case. Although 1
am not sufficiently disgruntled by our present system to refuse to
vote, I can understand those who are. I have often felt my vote
counted for nothing.
So I urge you to find some system of proportional representation
so that all voters' philosophies will be represented in the
legislature. In my view this would result in a much more legitimate
government. I ask you to consider in depth the system used in New
Zealand, which seems the fairest and most effective of all the
systems I have read about.
Opponents of proportional representation raise the fear of
minority governments as if they were something to be feared.
Minorities at the federal level have produced no noticeable harm in
Canada and have often resulted in some of our best social
legislation. So please don’t let fear of minority
government prevent you from seriously considering proportional
representation.
So I urge you to find a better system of electing a government
that will allow more of us to feel represented in our legislature.
I also thank you for your great effort in pursuing this task for so
long.
