The electoral system which recommends itself most to me is the preferential voting one [AV] used in Australia. It is fairer than our current system and avoids the many problems inherent in a proportional representation system. [1 page]

My submission is a very simple one. Since the establishment of our Citizens' Assembly I have spent a good deal of time reviewing the merits of electoral systems other than the "first past the post" version, and I have to say that the one that recommends itself most is the preferential one used in Australia [AV]. It is fairer than our current system and avoids the many problems inherent in a strict proportional representation system. Hence, I very much hope that the members of our Citizens' Assembly will look very carefully at the Australian model prior to making their final recommendation.
