This is not so much a formal submission to the Assembly as an
expression of my admiration for the organizers of and participants
in this process. I was pleased to be able to sit in on the January
24/25 instructional session and view the presentations and
subsequent discussion among members. By the end of the Sunday
session, the misgivings I had at the outset of the weekend were
entirely dispelled. I have rarely felt so proud to be a Canadian.
Not only did Assembly members appear sincerely interested in the
subject matter and intent on fulfilling their mandate to the best
of their abilities - they were also supremely respectful of one
another in their commentary and almost surprisingly conscious of
the duty to make sure the BC electoral system is as fair as
possible to all British Columbians. I feel confident entrusting
this group of people with the task of assessing the way we elect
our MLAs and will take their recommendation very seriously if the
process ends in a referendum. My thanks to everyone involved in the
Citizens' Assembly - from the government that kept its promise to
fund the endeavour, to the people behind the scenes who are now
running it, to the men and women from around the province who have
made the commitment to participate in it.
