representative democracyA
democratic
political system is now
assumed to be one in which periodic elections are held to choose
key
executive
and legislative office
holders and to keep the
government
responsive and accountable
to citizen voters. That is, popular control of
government is achieved indirectly through the election of
representatives to act on behalf of the political
community. It is now usually taken for granted that
democracy means representative democracy rather than
direct democracy
.
