casual vacancy

A casual vacancy is the technical term used for a vacancy in the membership of the legislative assembly which occurs between general elections .  Such vacancies can occur because of the death, resignation or disqualification of a member of the legislative assembly.  Such vacancies can be filled by holding a by-election or through some other procedure specified by the constitution or the rules governing elections.
