British Columbia’s Electoral System

Thank you for the opportunity to be heard on this important issue.

I was born and raised in British Columbia, and although I was educated in Ontario and abroad I have returned to this province to make my home. I value this province very much, and am happy to be present at a time when our political system is being updated. It is an incredible opportunity. I believe that our current electoral system is not truly democratic. It is a simple system that cannot accommodate the complexities of our contemporary political life. It is designed for two parties, and election results lay bare the inadequacy of the system.

A Proportional Representation system, enjoyed by several countries worldwide, such as in New Zealand, is clearly a system that is better suited to a multi-party system. It promotes coalitions based on policy, and therefore promotes cooperation and dialogue. It fairly represents voters, thereby encouraging voter turn out, enthusiasm and public dialogue. A Proportional Representation System would revitalize the political climate of this province.

If we are a people who truly support democracy, then we urgently need to step forward and revise our electoral system. Together, lets create a province that reflects our vibrant diversity!
