Please do not go for proportional representation
[PR]. it sounds great in theory but results in too many
small parties with special interests and invariably brings forth an
undemocratic parliament because coalition parties have to be formed
and invariably a small group dominates the majority and insists on
its agenda in defiance of the majority vote. Israel has
been held up from a solution to the Palestinian problem for decades
by a small (1%) religious right wing party. It looks like we are
headed for an example of the same with the coalition between the
liberals and the NDP but this will be resolved in time under our
present federal rules. But proportional representation cripples
parliament and negates the majority public vote and that problem
never gets solved. We become a country governed by special interest
groups with no relief or solution to the problem. Please make sure
that the vote of the common man counts.
