Abstract

Mixed proportional representation [MMP] appears to me the best
alternative to what currently serves us so poorly, particularly if
more seats could be added to prevent northern ridings from becoming
unmanageably large. [1 page]

I am very concerned by the polarization encouraged by the
current political system. Ruling parties feel they have no
obligations except to those who voted specifically for them. With
limited oppositions, vast numbers of people in the province have no
one who speaks for them. I am fed up with polarization and
governments who feel they can run roughshod. No wonder so many
young people opt not to take part in our current system.
Of the major contending alternatives, I am concerned by the STV
model. As a resident of northern BC I am concerned that it fails to
serve sparsely settled areas. Mixed proportional representation
[MMP] appears to me the best alternative to what currently serves
us so poorly. It is unfortunate that the Assembly mandate does not
permit adding additional ridings as I think the province would be
best served with a mixed proportional system which was able to add
additional seats in order to prevent northern ridings from becoming
unmanageably large.
