I wish to state I am in favour of a proportional representation
[PR] type of voting system in B.C. While I do not have
specific expertise or encyclopedic knowledge of the various
possibilities that exist under "pro-rep", I believe it is the most
likely method to ensure the wishers of the greatest number of
citizens are reflected in the outcomes on election day.
My recommendations to you would be:
-
To consider a system in which voters would cast a preferential
ballot, perhaps a 1, 2, 3 type of choice. I also favour a system in
which all candidates are chosen by the same process, preferably a
public process. The current system of candidates being chosed
(or,as we are seeing more frequently, appointed) by a political
party leaves the majority of citizens with no say in how candidates
are selected.
-
Parties coiuld still select candidates, but unaligned potential
candidates should also have equal acceess to the electoral process.
Perhaps some process needs to established whereby a person who
wishes to offer him or herself for public office could do so
through a selection board or process that ensures the person has an
adequate understanding of public issues and the role of government
and the political suystem in our lives, plus other to-be-decided
criteria. If the person passed such a selection process, s/he could
then be declared a candidate along with those selected by
parties.
