I had intended to voice my support for the MMP model in use in
New Zealand, but having browsed some of the other submissions, I am
also very impressed by the Preferential Plus system proposed by
Nick Loenen (submission #35). Certainly some form of
proportionality is urgently needed.
Is it any wonder voter turnout is so low, when thousands like me
look in vain to see their opinions reflected in the mainstream
parties. I would vote Green to express my view that we must act as
custodians for the land as a whole and not just the people on it --
but they are inexperienced, and it would waste a vote. I would vote
NDP as a social liberal (small l) or for strategic reasons -- but
despite a new leader, it is fundamentally the same party that
squandered money and lied about the budget. I might even vote
Liberal as a fiscal conservative -- if I thought there was a
socially conscious member who was free from the shackles of his or
her party.
We must reduce the ghastly polarization in BC politics, and its
attendant pendulum swings. Voters must feel they have a meaningful
choice to make. I am convinced that MMP would do this, and bring
other worthwhile changes too. If Nick Loenen is right, though, and
his Preferential Plus system would reduce internal party
discipline, effectively turning the nomination process over to the
voters, what a boon that would be! (I liked that his
sample ballot was easy to understand, too -- another must for any
new system)
Either way, please recommend some form of proportional
representation. I can't wait for December. Keep up the good work
all of you.
