I support a New Zealand-like Mixed Member Proportional [MMP]
voting system in BC. I agree with the five key Recommendations in
the Law Commission of Canada's report, Voting Counts: Electoral
Reform for Canada. Their recommendations should apply to
provincial as well as federal elections. Long range planning is
impossible under the present majority system. Consensus-decision
making is more productive than the majority wins type. In the 2001
BC election 200,000 people voted for the Green Party. The values
these people hold -- 12.4% of the voters -- are not represented in
the Legislature. Our present system was designed over 100 years ago
in England for a 2 party system. First Nations should be designated
a fixed number of seats. Special consultations need to take place
with First Nations people. Times have changed and so should our
electoral system.
