It is my opinion that we urgently need a form of proportional
representation in BC. Our present first-past-the-post
system ignores the votes of many of our citizens. Too
many people do not vote because they do not feel heard.
We live in a time when our collective and individual well-being are
being threatened by environmental degradation and climate
change. Repeatedly, we are told that there is no
political will to change things. We seem to be stuck
with politicians and political parties who are still doing business
as it has always been done with little consideration for the big
picture. There are small groups within many of our
communities that are looking ahead realisticallly. A
proportional representation [PR] system would allow some
of those forward-looking individuals to join the legislature and
bring their ideas to the attention of the government.
Our government must begin to incorporate new ways of operating and
I believe proportional representation is an important first step in
that direction.
