Abstract
Proportional representation [PR] is the only way I can vote without holding my nose. I vote because I feel so strongly that one must vote, but many do not have this sense of duty and will not vote. [1 page]

With the federal election looming, I feel even more strongly that proportional representation [PR] must be instituted, not just in BC, but for federal elections too. I am 52 years old and we were taught how a government was elected in CAnada in Grade 4 (I think there was a federal election that year).  I have always considered it my duty to vote, and felt that if you don't vote, you shouldn't whine. However, I notice many of my friends and aquaintances feel that it is foolish to vote, and feel that there is nobody to vote for. A non vote is their vote.

And I was feeling the same way. I am very split on how to vote, strongly supporting some planks in one party, and finding other programs offensive, however I feel strongly that I must vote. I even looked into a protest vote; i.e. none of the above, but that is not possible according to Elections Canada.

So proportional representation is the only way I can vote without holding my nose, which is what I have done(I voted early because I am leaving to go fishing). I voted because I feel so strongly that one must vote, but so many people I know have not been imbued with the same strong sense of duty and so will not vote, yet again. This means that a small minority of people will yet again elect a government, and then everyone will be dissatisfied for the next five years, or however long until the next go round. We will get the government we deserve, one that flagrantly disregards the will and good of the people, because they know they only have to please such a small number of the citizenry to achieve power.

Proportional Representation is the only way I can see that will get the non-voter out to vote, I have explained the procedure to many people and they seem to think it would make them more likely to vote.
