I favour a system of mixed proportional representation
[MMP] for British Columbia. I belive this electoral
system would result in a legislature that: reflects the diversity
of BC's population, ensures elected representatives are more
accountable to the electorate, and encourages all voters to
participate in elections. This electoral system balances the local
representation of the current constituency-based system with the
one-vote-one-voice philosophy of true proportional representation.
By casting one vote for a constituency representative and one for
an at-large candidate, each voter will have influence at both the
local and provincial levels. The at-large vote will provide a true
voice for British Columbians in the legislature with
representatives of each party according to the number of votes each
received. Political parties will therefore be more inclined to
listen to all British Columbians and form policies accordingly.
Mixed proportional representation offers better representation,
better democracy and a voice for all citizens.
Thank you for this opportunity.
