I have just read a news sheet I picked up at the library published by the Free Your Vote - Pro Rep Society and could find nothing in there which I could support.

First let me point out that democracy by its very nature is a form of majority rule. This means that the person with the most votes is the winner. The people who did not vote for the winner have to have the maturity to accept the will of the majority.

In my opinion, democracy breaks down in this country after the votes are counted! In representative government the people elect a representative as THEIR voice in government. Our current system of government has perverted this to the extent that it is not possible to call it a democracy. To have some unknown backroom Cabal in Ottawa telling all our representatives how to act, think and vote is not a democracy. The reality is that it is nothing more than an elected dictatorship. The crucial flaw destroying democracy can be found in the Westminister parlaimentary system. It was designed by aristocrats to ursurp power from a monarch; not to give the power to the people but to keep it for themselves. I would not stand being ruled by a monarch, and I am totally fed up with being ruled by a party!

This is what makes me uncomfortable with your proposals. My simple common sense analysis leads me to the conclusion that the power of the party needs to be cut back and limited not increased. Turning over 1/3rd of the Legislative Assembly seats to direct party control is not a solution that increases democracy. It will still be an elected dictatorship after the votes are counted.

It is this Westminister parliamentary system of an elected dictatorship which is the cause of Canadian voter apathy. Our representatives must be given a more democratic role to play in the government if people are to take their vote for this representative more seriously. It is time for the people to run this country and not the backroom party cabals that have had control of our country since its inception. I would strongly urge you to reccommend that the Westminister parlaimentary system of government be scrapped and a democratic system be adopted in its place. You cannot build a democratic system on a foundation that is fundamentally undemocratic.
