My husband and I are writing to express our support for
electoral reform in British Columbia. We believe the
current single member plurality system is causing a breakdown in
democracy, resulting in extremely low voter turn-out, especially
among youth. The current system discourages people from voting
because people feel their votes are wasted. Alternatively, people
will vote for the lesser-of-two-evils, rather than the person or
party they feel most closely represents their views.
We urge the Citizens’ Assembly to
recommend a Mixed Member Proportional [MMP] system for British
Columbia. This system would result in better political
representation of the citizens of BC, allowing smaller parties to
have seats in the legislature. It would increase voter turn-out
because people would feel their votes count and their views are
represented.
Thank you very much for your work to ensure that British
Columbians will have a better electoral system in the future.
