I am writing to state my support for a mixed-member style (MMP)
proportional representation style electoral system in BC. Ideally
I'd like to see it become our system of elections for all of
Canada. Two years ago I saw an MP from New Zealand speak about
their MMP style system of pro-rep. I was impressed that their
country is the only one in the world to have the same proportion of
women and aboriginal (Maori) peoples represented in parliament as
there are in the general population. We are not even close to that
in Canada.
I volunteered for the Green Party in the last BC election and of
course voted Green. It was heartbreaking to watch my vote be
nullified by an antequated, horse race style system that in the end
serves the interests of only a few powerful political forces.
Effectively, under first past the post, I have no voice in
government. This is unjust and should be abolished. Put my vote
down for an MMP-style system of proportional representation in
BC.
