I was a canvasser for the Free Your Vote campaign in 2002. That
campaign failed due to lack of canvasser commitment (4002 of us
collected 98,165 signatures for an average of 24.5 each) and not
due to a lack of desire by voters for change. I collected about 500
signatures and took the time to talk to those people. Many signed
because they wanted change and signing for MMP was only an
expression of that desire. Their choices varied and many had no
choice other than "a change". Many more refused to sign because
they were not knowledgable on the choices and therefore reluctant
to sign.
Your Assembly will greatly relieve that reluctance. Very few
expressed satisfaction with our present system. I am not a firm
supporter of Adrianne Carr's Mixed Member Proportional idea in Free
Your Vote. I lean towards STV but I am first and foremost a strong
believer that we need a change. I hope you also come to the same
conclusion. Voter apathy has to be addressed. Thanks you all for
your time!
